about

In February 1997, Edinburgh duo The Soul Cracker completed a song they called 'Nightbus'. It was one of their longest and most polished pieces, yet like all of their other work it was mostly only ever heard by themselves.

The duo of Ricky Cameron and Stewart Bremner met while working at a burger chain and bonded over their love of music, among other things. For about a decade, from 1995 onwards, they occasionally created music together. Their first forays happened in the overnight downtime at what is now called Sound Sound Studio, near Edinburgh Airport. ‘Nightbus’ – named for their transport out to the studio – was one of the last things they created out there.

‘Nightbus’ is probably my favourite song that Ricky and I created and it’s the one I’ve listened to most since. Recently I noticed the quality of the recording was a little muddy and so I decided to refresh it a little. Of course, once I started tinkering with it, I found myself unable to stop…

‘Nightbus (Replacement Service)’ is the new version I created, which has a clear Sleeper Service vibe to it, with found sounds, metal guitars and layers of synth. 'Nightbus (Route Diversion)' takes it all one step further – and slower.

‘Nightbus (Refresh)’ is the cleaned-up 1997 track, with tape hiss removed and drums made a little sharper.
